Thornhill Child Care – VIK Academy joined the Society in May 2021 and became Thornhill’s first centre in the town of OKOTOKS. Located in the supportive living Senior’s Residence Tudor Manor, this center partners with the Brenda Strafford Foundation to provide an inter-generational program to children and seniors alike. This unique program creates wonderful opportunities for children and seniors to interact and develop relationships. It aligns Thornhill’s mission of providing a secure, caring learning environment with The Brenda Strafford Foundation’s mission to optimize well-being and enrich people’s lives.
The centre accommodates children from 12 months to 6 years of age and has a capacity for 83 children. We offer competitive rates and accept child care subsidy. We are an inclusive environment, and support early intervention and diverse learning needs with access to Program Unit Funding and Mild/Moderate funding from Alberta Education.
Our Educators use both emergent curriculum and the FLIGHT curriculum to co-create a program with the children that meets their physical, social-emotional, and intellectual needs. Using observation and reflection, our dedicated Educators determine children’s interests and seek to broaden their understanding of their environment and the larger community as a whole. Children are also exposed to a French language component, as many of our educators speak French with the children.
As a community-based program, we encourage parent involvement and practice an open-door policy. Parents are welcome to participate in the program and to join our Board of Directors to have an impact on the future direction.
